The Columbus zoo has a close working relationship with the Wilds, a 10000 acre animal conservation center located in southeast Ohio The wilds is North America's largest conservation facility and located about 24 miles southeast of Zanesville. The Columbus Zoo is the country's top rated zoo. It is one of the world's largest state-of-the-art wild life conservations and home to rare and endangered species from around the world and hundreds of indigenous species. The animals live in a natural, open-range habitat where they roaming just as they would in the wild. AEP reclaimed the area from coal-mining lands in southeast Ohio. It once contained the world's largest shovel. "Big Muskie" was the World's Largest Earth Moving Machine. What remains now is a monstrous metal bucket, The recent disaster here occurred on October 19, when Sheriff's deputies shot 48 animals that belonged to Terry Thompson, who opened the animal's cages and then committed suicide. The buffalo herd in the video may have belonged to Thompson.
